CHAPTER FOURTEEN

~ATONEMENT~

The knock on the door interrupted strategic contemplations. He had all but plotted out his return home. A full case of beer and no sleep left the wolf on edge, so Jeremiah climbed into the shower and allowed the warm water to wash away his tension. The sun had begun its path to return to the sky as he stepped out of the shower and headed for the door with a towel wrapped around his waist. Another attempt at using his beacon to track his former team proved useless. They were off his radar which was cause for concern. Something wasn’t right and he could feel it. His team hadn’t just abandoned mission, they’d been called back to base. He would have to get back on the move soon. He made it to the door half expecting it to be Sirus’ messenger with some food or drink or maybe some supplies to aid him in his journey. The scent that poured through the cracks around the door told him otherwise and his wolf growled in confused delight.

“What are you doing here?” Jeremiah groaned as he opened the door.

“I wanted to talk to you.” Tatiana rolled her eyes as if so much should be obvious to the wolf.

“Exactly what is it that you want to talk about? You said all you needed to say.” Jeremiah turned from the door, but didn’t close it. He wasn’t ready for the conversation to end. He only wanted her to know that he was still upset.

“And that’s just it? You’re done with me, writing me off for one shitty thing I did in my past?” She questioned to his back, her anger searing into his flesh.

“It’s more than that, it's not what you did, it's why you did it. What you told me, so matter of factly, it changed the way I see you.” Jeremiah was honest in his reply. He felt uneasy around her now. It was his own fault for putting her up on a pedestal and expecting so much from her. For years, he had built the memory of her up to this infallible being, something she would never have been able to live up to. He understood that she was in no way perfect. She made mistakes like anyone else, but this was something he would never have thought her capable of. “I wonder if your remorse is only because of who he turned out to be. How am I to know that this is not a common practice for you?”

“No, it’s not, I’m not that type of person, and it was never my intention to do that to him. Not with my body, it just happened. You have to understand, my sister died and by the hands of some unremorseful bitch! So yes, I would do anything to get revenge for her.” She finally crossed the threshold into the house. “Hell, look at all you put yourself through to get here to help Malcom. He didn’t even know that he was your brother, but you still risked your life for him.
